Movies: One Being Filmed, One Being Shown Locally
If you haven’t heard by now, there is a movie crew in town that has been filming in the Saguache area this month, with an additional two more weeks of production scheduled. So get ready for your CLOSE-UP!
Two Plains & a Fancy, is a satirical, experimental “Spa Western” set in 1893. The new feature film by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn (L for Leisure) follows a group of tourists searching for the most perfect hot springs in Colorado, and finding only ruins. To date, the group has filmed at the Valley View Hot Springs as well as Cow Town in Saguache County. While it’s not exactly a full-on Hollywood production, the film makers have been enjoying the valley’s natural beauty and putting some money into the local economy through lodging, food and gas needs during their stay.
According to the crew’s Kickstarter Campaign, which is put in place to help raise funds toward the project: The two of us (Lev and Whit) have been making films together for the last twelve years. We started off making these snotty low-fi 16mm ‘satires’ with friends an d…we’re pretty much gonna keep doing that forever. So far our two most major projects have been Blondes in the Jungle (2009) and L for Leisure (2015). Both films are period pieces that mix straightforward narrative and jokes with experimental techniques that de-naturalize and recontextualize the stories. Sublime desert landscapes, hapless intellectual conversations, and elaborate sensual bathing rituals clash in this subversive, joyfully anachronistic “Spa Western.”
