Town Board Meets in Saguache Today @ 6:30 p.m.

The Town of Saguache is moving forward on many infrastructure items at this time. We have received a grants from the State of Colorado Department of Public Affairs and from the Colorado Water Resources & Power Development Authority in the total amount of $35,000 for planning purposes to prepare an assessment of the Town Sewer Lines. The assessment is being prepared by our engineering firm Schmueser Gordon Meyer, Inc. (SGM), and will be completed in the first few weeks of October. Then we will move forward with Phase I of the construction portion which has been tentatively scheduled to begin May, 2017.
The Town continues to move forward with the creation of the Vista Grande Recreational Area. The Brownfield Assessment will be completed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment within the next few weeks and water/soil sampling will take place toward the end of October. Once any required clean-up has been completed, we will move forward with grants for construction of the recreational area.
Under advice of our water attorney and engineer, the Town of Saguache is planning to submit a Water Augmentation Plan by December 31, 2016. The plan consists of the State of Colorado determining a measured amount of water we use from the distinct aquifers and how the Town of Saguache will repay or replace those amounts back to the distinct aquifers. Over the next 45 days you may notice us around town measuring to determine the amount of water we can and will repay or be credited for with the use of our acequai systems (Gotthelf Ditch).
Pursuant to the consensus of the Town Trustees at their July 18th meeting, the question of whether the Town should proceed with the purchase of the Dunn Block (Mason Building) shall go to a vote of the people. Town Attorney Gene Farish has been directed to prepare the ballot question and determination is being made now regarding the date for a Special Election. The Town has been awarded a $35,000 grant toward the $50,000 purchase price by History Colorado, and the Town Trustees must determine to accept or reject this grant prior to March 31, 2017. If you want to give input and/or understand this matter fully, please attend the Historic Preservation Commission’s Public Hearing on December 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the County Road & Bridge Meeting Room.
Pursuant to the consensus of the Town Trustees at their July 18 meeting, the question of whether the Town should allow Retail Marijuana stores shall go to a vote of the people. Town Attorney Gene Farish has been directed to prepare the ballot question to include all taxation language. Due to the taxation questions, this question must go to a vote of the people during the next regular election cycle in April, 2017.
The Public Works Department has been hard at work catching up on tree trimming around town, and evaluating any permanent structures encroaching on Town Right of Ways and Easements. If you want to know if your structures are creating an encroachment, contact Town Hall at 719-655-2232.
Town Hall staff is working on creating better efficiency with water and sewer accounts. We are also making changes within the office to meet the recommendations of our insurance company.
