HEART of Safety in Saguache Today
Last month the HEART of Saguache/KV hosted their 2nd Saguache Community Health and Safety Event.
“We had an incredible turnout of both information booths and visitors and it was great to share so much information with the community,” said Miracle Gomez one of the event’s organizers.
The idea for this event first came about at the suggestion of Valley-Wide Health Services which was interested in making stronger connections in KV Estates. As a result HEART of Saguache/KV hosted the event for the first time in 2018 at the KV Clubhouse as an outreach specifically for residents of KV Estates. During the inaugural event, it was suggested by many that HEART should do a similar event in Saguache so that more people could participate and attend. The event was held on October 19 on the Saguache County Courthouse lawn and was made possible in part by a generous grant for the Alpine Achievers Initiative.
And the timing couldn’t have been better with a number of safety issues have been in the news headlines, from the Moffat fire to an escaped inmate. The goal was to provide necessary safety information and equipment as well as information about community resources to the residents of Saguache County.
The highlights of the day were the talks given twice during the day by the Volunteer Fire Department and EMS on fire safety and first aid. Participants who signed up for and attended those talks received a fire extinguisher and smoke/carbon monoxide detector and a first aid kit respectively. The talks were engaging and the rewards; useful, necessary household items, were well received.
The Saguache County Courthouse lawn proved to be the perfect venue with lovely fall weather in a beautiful setting. There were free drawings throughout the day for useful safety-related equipment and many people left with great prizes. Music was provided by Jacob Chavez of Remedy Records and HEART of Saguache/KV volunteers cooked up a free barbecue lunch for the entire community. Cory Ross and Larry Ormsby kindly offered their assistance and vehicle for set-up.
Groups attending were, the League of Women Voters, Saguache County Museum, Communities that Care, the Libertarian Party, Planned Parenthood of Alamosa/Salida, The Saguache Chamber of Commerce, The Saguache Senior Center, Valley to Valley Senior Care, Butterflies Sing, the San Luis Valley Veterans Coalition, Alpine Achievers Initiative, Saguache Works, Cooking Matters, Valley Roots Food Coalition, Valley-Wide Health Services, Department of Social Services, AirMedCare Network, Saguache Volunteer Fire Department, Northern Saguache County Ambulance District, and of course HEART of Saguache/KV. Groups that didn’t participate this year and would like to next year are encouraged to contact HEART of Saguache/KV.
In addition, Valley-Wide brought their mobile medical unit and offered free dental and health screenings. Coats and backpacks were given away to children. HEART also thanks the Saguache County Sheriff’s office for spending time at the event getting to know the community.
HEART of Saguache/KV is a grassroots health equity organization committed to ending poverty and disengagement among affected populations through education, increasing diversity, and creating equity throughout our community to secure a positive future.
