Saguache Remembers: Memorial Weekend
Festivities Kick Off Summer Season!
Three cheers for the red, white, and blue and Memorial Day too! What better way to remember those on this unofficial kick-off to summer weekend than with a parade and community party?! The Saguache Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the American Legion Garcia Post 110 to offer activities during Memorial Weekend. The event’s theme is to learn more about the history of this special weekend.
The fun starts with the Veterans Parade on Saturday, May 29 at 11 a.m. Expect a sea of red, white, and blue as local residents and groups march 4th Street in downtown Saguache. It’s a day of patriotic pride, so wave those flags in honor of lost loved ones!
Then head over to Otto Mears Park for some local fair fun as the return of vendors brings together the Saguache community in a meaningful, safe manner. Expect some food and handcrafted goodies! The event will be held at the park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday only. Come out and see those smiling faces from friends and neighbors you haven’t seen in a while!
Then on Sunday, May 30 the Saguache County Museum will officially open for the season! This year while the museum’s board and staff decided to be cautious and not have the usual big Opening Day party, the public is still invited to stop over and say hi! The historic facility will be open for the season starting from Memorial Day Sunday through Labor Day, daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is Adults $7 children 12 and under $3.
The Saguache County Museum is fully staffed with a fantastic crew that is “definitely delighted to once again greet and meet all.” The staff reports some new books and displays have been added to their collection this season, but guests can still find all of their favorites “oldies” as well. Stop by this Saguache County gem across from the park off Highway 285 this Memorial Weekend or anytime this summer! The Saguache County Museum is a nonprofit 501(c)3 and has been around for 63 years. Make it a point to stop in this season!
The Memorial Weekend festivities continue Monday, May 31 as the American Legion Garcia Post 110 pays tribute to lost loved ones. In the true spirit of the holiday, this local civic group will conduct two ceremonies. The first at 10:30 a.m. at the Hillside located right in town. Then the group will head to the Old Chicago Cemetery for another Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. The public is invited to attend these services, but if you can’t please take a moment and remember lost loved ones in some meaningful way.
