Time for Tricks, Treats in Saguache Today
A Costume Comeback for the Kiddos
Trick or Treaters – young and bold – will have plenty of fun to behold when it comes to celebrating the spookiest season of the year in Saguache Today! So grab your Halloween costume and candy bag. It’s time to get your spooky on!
Festivities have been underway all week as the lead up to the most frightful day on the calendar. From dress-up time at Mountain Valley School to the Pumpkin Carving Contest sponsored by HEART of Saguache/KV to the Saguache Library’s special treats for students, it’s clear that Halloween is back BIG TIME in Saguache Today! And it continues with the big Saguache Halloween Celebration on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2021.
The festive fun for students at Mountain Valley School saw an enthusiastic return as the Halloween costumes were back in force – and looking good! Even the staff got into the spooky swing of it, honoring classic movie monsters, like “The Mummy” and “Dracula!” Pictured with their students are Teacher Peggy Garcia Williams, Assistant Teacher Jenny Ross, Director Lacy Nicole Harford-Reed, Teacher Heidi Gallegos. Can you guess which film characters they are?
Is your kiddo ready for the big candy-grab that is Halloween? Well thanks to the Northern Saguache County Library District and Tahrea, several Trick-or-Treaters in Saguache Today will be ready to scoop up all those goodies with the handmade #trickortreat bags! These festive satchels were part of several programs the staff had planned this week to mark the holiday. And guess what? As of a few days ago, there were still a few more of these bags available at the Saguache branch. Get them while they last! Thanks to all the librarians’ efforts for #halloweenfunatthelibrary #happyhalloween.
In case you missed it, the results from the gourd gouging contest are in – and the final creations are impressive! The competition was sponsored by HEART of Saguache/KV and split up into age groups, with the younger set having fun safely painting their pumpkins. But it was the older kids that did it up in style, carving up some pretty impressive gourds which are being judged by category, along with a People’s Choice Award. Which are your favorites?

Trunk-or-Treat on Sunday
The merriment culminates this Sunday, October 31 with a variety of family-friendly events hosted by the Mountain Valley School Booster Club, which joins efforts with local firefighters. Ghosts and goblins can participate in the Trunk or Treat event set up in front of the furehouse on Denver Avenue. What a great way for the kiddos to get out and collect their goodies in a safe manner.
The popular around-town trick-or-treating hayrack ride will return this year. Then it’s back to the firehouse for a delicious chili dinner starting at 5:30 p.m. There is no charge, but donations are welcome. Afterward, there will be a fantastic costume contest! Which outfit will claim the top prize? Find out for yourself and join the competition parade which begins at 6 p.m. at the firehouse located on Denver Avenue and 4th Street in the heart of downtown Saguache. There will be some candy, delicious chili, and hot chocolate.
Thanks to the Mountain Valley School Booster Club who join efforts with local firefighters in helping to coordinate this safe, family-friendly event.
